Tips for Visiting the Biltmore Estate—Where to Stay in Asheville, NC

For reference, the Biltmore typically sees the most significant crowds between 11 a.m. If you can go in the morning, the Biltmore House gardens open at 9 a.m. So, you could even walk through the gardens before your ticketed time slot. If you are planning to enjoy dinner at Antler Hill Village, I would suggest making a reservation ahead of time—the waitlist can get long, especially in the evenings.

In the 1970s, George Vanderbilt’s grandson William A.V. Cecil had a vision of honoring his grandfather’s agricultural legacy by creating a sustainable winery. Fast forward to 1983 and the Biltmore Estate Wine Company bottled its very first vintage of Château Biltmore Merlot and Château Biltmore Cabernet Sauvignon, both crafted from North Carolina grapes. The Biltmore Collection continues to grow today, building upon George’s legacy. It was a decision by the family to add a work of modern art to the collection,” Marissa Jamison, Biltmore’s PR manager of 12 years, tells AD.

History of the Biltmore Estate

To bring his original vision to life, George hired prominent New York architect Richard Morris Hunt. I'm a writer from Phoenix, AZ who loves coffee, golden retriever puppies, and obviously, travel! I help ordinary women (like me!) dream, plan, and do extraordinary travel experiences. I had no idea how stunning and extensive the Biltmore Gardens were! The Biltmore House is impressive, but in my opinion, the gardens are the real showstopper.

According to a virtual tour of the gardens, Vanderbilt envisioned a self-sustaining estate that would nurture the land and its resources for years to come. The Cecils first opened the Biltmore house doors to the public in 1930, amid requests to increase area tourism during the Great Depression. The family also helped store priceless art during World War II as a favor to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. Give yourself ample time to experience all Biltmore has to offer. The story of the Biltmore estate starts with the man who dreamed it up, George W. Vanderbilt. The grandson of Cornelius "the Commodore" Vanderbilt, who built his fortune as a shipping and railroad magnate, Vanderbilt fell in love with the scenery of Asheville, North Carolina. There’s a veritable castle in the heart of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains called the Biltmore Estate. Elegant and grand, it looks like it belongs in a French fairytale. But the story of this magnificent home, the largest privately owned home in the United States, is distinctly American. Although the Omni Grove Park Inn isn’t as close to Biltmore as the other properties we’ve mentioned, there’s no way we could leave it off this list!

Pets must be kept on a leash at all times and are not allowed in any buildings. The only public bathrooms are outside the home in the stable area. Pick a weekday during one of these months, and you can enjoy a sunny day at the Biltmore, see the Garden in full bloom, and avoid the crowds. November and December, when Biltmore is decked out for Christmas, will always be pricier than other months. George Washington Vanderbilt II first visited the Asheville area in 1887 and quickly fell in love with the idea of building a country home here.

Just outside the entrance gate of Biltmore Estate is historic Biltmore Village. Biltmore Village is a historic district that is home to fine art galleries, top notch restaurants and a mix of boutique and nationally recognized shops. There are several places to stay in Biltmore Village, from luxury accommodations to family-friendly hotels.

The home was built with elite, luxurious amenities for the time period, like indoor plumbing, electricity, a fire alarm system, and even a telephone system, all of which were hallmarks of the Gilded Age. It was during the Gilded Age, in 1888, that George Washington Vanderbilt, the grandson of famed industrialist Cornelius Vanderbilt, first visited Asheville. The beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains captivated George and, shortly thereafter, he began purchasing parcels of farmland for what would one day become Biltmore Estate.

When it comes to ticketing options, there are two for Christmas at Biltmore. After your wine tasting at Biltmore Winery, make sure to browse through the wine shop to take home some wine or specialty food items that you can’t find anywhere else. That’s where many guests of the Vanderbilts would get some rest after their time spent at the gardens.

Each meticulously maintained, beautifully planted space expresses the vision of renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. The south facade is the house's smallest and is dominated by three large dormers on the east side and a polygonal turret on the west. An arbor is attached to the house and is accessed from the library, which is located on the ground floor. On the north end of the house, Hunt placed the attached stables, carriage house and its courtyard to protect the house and gardens from the wind. The 12,000 sq ft (1,100 m2) complex housed Vanderbilt's prized driving horses. The carriage house opposite the stables stored his twenty carriages in addition to any of his guests' carriages.

Antler Hill Village hosts a farm, shopping, and an Outdoor Adventure Center that offers plenty of fun activities. You can go fly fishing, ride a horse, do a Segway tour, and more. But if you are visiting Biltmore with younger children, there is a playground and farm at Antler Hill Village! You can even pet the goats at the farm and watch as artisans make wood and metal crafts by hand. If you’re looking for even more fun on the vine, you can tour the vineyard, enjoy chocolate pairings, taste premium wines, and join a wine and cheese hour (Fridays and Saturdays).

The Biltmore Exclusive Experience is one of three House tours now offered. The service hub of the house is also found in the largest basement in the country. After the Cecils divorced in 1934, Cornelia left the estate, never to return, but John Cecil maintained his residence in the Bachelors' Wing until his death in 1954. Their eldest son, George Henry Vanderbilt Cecil, occupied rooms in the wing until 1956.
